Stars for Burma - Celebrities supporting freedom and democracy in Burma

DUSTIN HOFFMAN, SUSAN SARANDON and ROBIN WILLIAMS have joined JIM CARREY's pleas for military-ruled Myanmar to release imprisoned Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi. Democracy leader Aung San, 62, has spent the majority of the past 17 years under house arrest or in prison in the south east Asian nation, formerly known as Burma. Hollywood stars Carrey, Hoffman, Sarandon, Williams, Owen Wilson, Jennifer Aniston and singer Damien Rice have signed a letter addressed to United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to intervene in Aung San's case and seek her immediate release. The letter reads, "Aung San Suu Kyi is not just a charismatic leader, she is the elected leader of the Burmese people. This courageous, brave woman whom many call 'Burma's Nelson Mandela' should be released and the military regime should end its attacks on civilians." Last month (Aug07), Carrey appeared in a YouTube video on behalf of the Human Rights Action Center and the U.S. Campaign For Burma, demanding Aung San's release.
